Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Receive Top-Notch Care for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome From Our Central Texas OBGYNs

Do you struggle with irregular periods, severe acne, weight gain and/or abnormal hair growth? If so, you may have polycystic ovary syndrome, also referred to as PCOS. Approximately 10 percent of women in their childbearing years are affected by PCOS. Our Central Texas OBGYNs have the skills and expertise to diagnose and treat this condition.

What is polycystic ovary syndrome?

Characterized as a hormone disorder, PCOS affects five million to six million women in this country. It is the leading cause of female infertility. With polycystic ovary syndrome, small fluid-filled cysts form on the edges of the ovaries. Additionally, women with this condition produce abnormal levels of androgens, or male hormones, which often disrupt ovulation and normal menstrual cycles. Unfortunately, the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but women with mothers or sisters who have it are at a higher risk of developing the condition.

Recognizing symptoms of PCOS

Not all women with this condition will develop obvious symptoms. Diagnosing PCOS, however, is important because this health problem can lead to an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart issues and other health concerns.

There are several common signs of PCOS to watch for.

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Excessive weight gain
  • Unusual facial hair
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Insulin resistance
  • Infertility

How we diagnose PCOS

No single test will confirm polycystic ovary syndrome. First, your provider will take a complete medical history, which should include any symptoms you have experienced. To validate the diagnosis, your OBGYN will also perform a pelvic exam to check for any changes, order blood tests to measure hormones, and schedule a sonogram to view your reproductive organs.

Exploring PCOS treatment options

Your physician will work with you to address your specific areas of concern and create an appropriate treatment plan. Our Central Texas OBGYNs may make several recommendations to women dealing with PCOS.

  • Lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and added exercise to combat weight gain
  • Birth control pills to minimize acne and regulate periods
  • Hormone therapy to increase the chances of ovulation and improve pregnancy odds
  • Medications such as metformin or semaglutide to combat insulin resistance
  • Fertility treatment for those trying to conceive
