Mammograms

Mammograms detect breast cancer and save lives

Conservative estimates suggest a new patient is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2.5 seconds. In our San Antonio women’s clinic, our doctors are committed to supporting our patients, so that they can live full, healthy lives. Part of this mission includes encouraging our patients 40 years and older to start getting mammograms.

Used as a screening tool to help detect breast cancer, these imaging studies involve taking a series of low-dose X-rays of each breast. By taking X-rays from different angles, the test produces images that show any changes in breast tissue.

Screening mammograms are the first line of defense against breast cancer. If those X-rays show any abnormalities, your San Antonio women’s clinic doctor and/or the radiologist will likely recommend a diagnostic mammogram, which can provide additional views and more detail.

What to know about mammograms

The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin screening mammograms at 40 to 44 years old. If you have family history of breast cancer, your doctor may suggest starting at a younger age. The newest guidelines recommend annual testing for women ages 45 to 54. Starting at 55, women can either continue getting annual testing, or switch to getting the test every other year.

Generally, these breast imaging studies can identify the following changes in breast tissue.

  • Calcifications
  • Masses
  • Asymmetries
  • Distortions

When cancer is caught early, odds of treatment and survival increase dramatically. These imaging studies can help find cancer while it is still small, often before patients experience any signs or symptoms. While a mammogram can highlight areas that need further investigation, it can’t diagnose cancer. Additional tests, such as blood work and a breast biopsy, are needed to confirm the findings.

Preparing for your breast cancer screening

We encourage women to make this test part of their annual healthcare routine. For best results, select a facility that specializes in mammograms and conducts many of them every day. Consider these tips as well.

  • Discuss with your doctor any changes in your breasts or any concerns, before your actual mammogram appointment.
  • Once you select a provider, try to return to the same place, so that the radiologist can easily compare and analyze your results year after year.
  • If you have had prior mammograms at a different facility, request the old records beforehand, so that the new images can be compared to previous scans.
  • Avoid scheduling your mammogram near your period to minimize discomfort and ensure the best images.
